Library Drop Box
Gina asked me to post this for her some time ago... Sorry, Gina, I forgot. Heather, can you add her to the poster list?
Did you know there is a library drop box in the parking lot of the Good Year at the Virginia Gateway?? Totally helped me out yesterday. They just ask that if you are returning media to put them in a plastic bag.

Centreville BK
I don't know if any of you have been to the Burger King in Centreville recently with the two story play area, but I was there yesterday and the upstairs has gotten a big face lift! I was pleasantly suprised to see that they have taken out all of the old tables and put in couches and bar stools and made it much more like a coffe shop. In fact, there were two business men working on their laptops when we got there. Just thought I would pass it on, it was really nice!
Free Dr. Pepper!
I love diet DP so much that I had to share this little tid-bit I read online!
Dr Pepper to deliver on its free-soda promise
LOS ANGELES — Dr Pepper is making good on its promise of free soda now that the release of Guns N' Roses' "Chinese Democracy" is a reality.
The soft-drink maker said in March that it would give a free soda to everyone in America if the album dropped in 2008. "Chinese Democracy," infamously delayed since recording began in 1994, goes on sale Sunday.
"We never thought this day would come," Tony Jacobs, Dr Pepper's vice president of marketing, said in a statement. "But now that it's here, all we can say is: The Dr Pepper's on us."
Beginning Sunday at 12:01 a.m., coupons for a free 20-ounce soda will be available for 24 hours on Dr Pepper's Web site. They'll be honored until Feb. 28.
Dr Pepper is owned by Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc.

Halloween Candy Overload?
Last week when Natalie was at the dentist, they told us that if we had too much Halloween candy after trick-or-treating you can bring it to their office and they will pay the kids $1/pound and the office will be sending the candy to our troops. What a nice idea!
The office is Gainesville Pediatric Dentistry on the corner of Wellington and Limestone (behind Lowes).

Coupon Codes
I'm sure most of you do a quick google search for coupon codes before buying something online, but what if you don't find one? I have figured out that you can buy someone elses coupon code on ebay. I've used this for Gymboree and just today for Crazy 8. I bought a 20% coupon code for $1.50 and saved $16 off my purchase. This is for those one time codes that they sometimes send in the mail along with an in store coupon. Remember this the next time you shop!

Michaels
With all the competitors coupons you can use at Michaels (they take AC Moore and JoAnne's) I always go in there with nothing less than 2 coupons to use at any time. However, my frenzy was put to a hault today when she wouldn't let me use an AC Moore "25% off total purchase, regular and sales prices" coupon. They'll only take competitors single purchase coupons, i.e. 40% off one item, 50% off one item, etc. They won't take competitors % off total price coupons. Just FYI for you craft junkies like me.

Pre-Christmas Shopping
I'm trying to spread out the spending frenzy that usually takes place in December this year.
If any of you will be buying video games this holiday season, there is a great sale at Toys R Us right now. Buy 2 get one free! That's any combination of games for any game systems (PSP's, Gameboys, Wii, XBOX, and whatever I'm forgetting). Sale goes through Saturday, but there are some limited quantities and no rain checks.

Farmers Market
On the way home today, I was driving down Heathcoate towards Catharpin and stopped at a little Farmers Market! It's every Thursday from 3-7pm at that retirement apartment complex called The Marque. The market is in their parking lot. The apts are on the right before you get to Heritage Hunt. The market had baked goods, honey, soaps, and tons of veggies. It was really fun! They said they'd do it till end of October. Ashley loved trying all the little tomatoes. They also have fun exotic veggies like sugar babies (sweet little watermelons) and other odd things. Very fun.
Bolt Bus
Okay Ladies, if you like going to New York City, here's your big chance! The AFFORDABLE way! I was a little skeptical at first, but I tried it out myself with my kids and Bolt Bus ROCKS! You get on their website www.boltbus.com and book your bus. It's a shuttle from downtown DC to Manhattan. There are other locations as well. But I must tell you that I was so impressed. The bus was a huge, brand new. Leather seats, free wi-fi, and outlets on the back of each seat so you can plug in those DVD players for the kids. There is a bathroom on the bus and it was very clean, very new. It took about 4 1/2 hrs to get to Manhattan and the best part is the PRICE. I paid $60 for 3 of us round trip. That took care of tolls, gas, everything! The earlier you book a trip, the cheaper it is. The tickets start at $1 round trip and go higher the later you book/more demand. So go to that Broadway show or see the Rockettes! You can now because it'll cost the same price as a lunch out.

I know this isn't exactly the type of post intended for this blog, but Heather invited me a long time ago and I've never contributed! For what it's worth I thought some of you might be interested in this, already know about it, or be kind enough to pass the info on to others!
Last week Christian and Stephanie Nielson were in a very serious plane crash. They are a young LDS couple with four children under the age of six. They are in critical condition. Stephanie has third degree burns covering 80% of her body and Christian has third degree burns over 30% of his body. The recovery will be very long and very expensive.
If you are able, please consider contributing to this fund that will go directly to the family. http://www.nierecovery.com/

There are some great things out there all helping a wonderful cause! (designmom is also an awesome, awesome blog that you should be checking daily anyway! :) )

Half Moon Beach is a cool place if you are like my family and don't mind swimming in mucky water. The sand is awesome there w/ sand volleyball and row boats too. You should check it out... it's in Strasburg only about 40 mins from Gainesville/ Haymarket.
Oh and it's named half moon beach because the water is shaped like a half moon :) ha. We wondered.
They have a huge outdoor paintball set up there too.

long car rides with kids
Just got back from the Pediatric Urologists. The doctor informed me of something that I thought other parents might find interesting. Red food coloring is a diuretic. Red coloring is in purple, pink and sometimes orange food products. Remember that on your next road trip with the family and the kids want a grape Gatorade. The fewer the stops the better for my husband, so I found this information valuable.

In the past thare have been coupons for a free personal pizza from Pizza Hut, tickets to the fair, and Splashdown Water Park, and lots of buy one get one coupons for restaraunts. You can sign up at any library, but whatever one you sign up at you have to keep going to to get your prizes.

Online surveys for gift certificates
I have been doing these online surveys for about a year now and although the time probably isn't worth the reward, you do get something for doing these surveys. My favorite one is My Survey, because they send me the most and there is also Zoom Panel and E-poll. So far I have only cashed in on my My Survey points and have gotten several Target gift cards, although you can pick what kind of gift card you want or redeem them for prizes.

Do you have any young children bouncin' off the walls? Well, I do! Bring them to House of Bounce tomorrow (Monday, June 9) at 10:30. You can sit back and chat with the ladies while the kids work at tiring themselves out. I have a $4 off coupon if anyone would like to use it!

Great Country Farms
This has been a favorite destination of ours for a few years now. It is a great place to pick virtually any fruit or vegetable and they have lots of kids stuff too like a petting farm, homemade slides and swings, mazes, and this big air pillow jumping thing. The drive there is so pretty, but be aware that there is an admission charge even if you are only going to pick produce.
Flying Circus and Hot Air Balloon Festival
My mom went to this festival last year and said it was really neat to watch all of those beautiful hot air balloons go up into the sky. I think we will go this year on August 16. I have also wanted to take advantage of their airplane shows, but it looks like they are always on Sundays.
C & O Canal
This is a great ride to take visitors from out of town or just to do with your family like we did. The mules actually pull the barge on a short trip down the canal and you get to experience them opening and closing the locks that allow the boat to rise or fall. It's full of history too, and the workers are dressed up in period clothing. There is also a long trail/path that is fun for biking or walking.
Fairfax County Summer Entertainment Series in the parks
I've had this site bookmarked for some time now and have never taken advantage of the free concerts and children's shows offered throughout the Fairfax County parks. Several of the shows are at Burke Lake Park which in and of itself it a lot of fun, and most of them seem to be on Saturday mornings. Several of them look like they would be great for adults and kids.
Drive-In Theatre
Did you know that there is a drive-in theatre in Stephens City? It's a bit of a hike, but very fun for the family. We went once before and just opened up the back of our Jeep and ate our popcorn while we watched the shows. There are two screens, usually one with a double feature of kid flicks and one with adult. Jeremy and I parked right inthe middle so that we could watch a kid show and then the kids fell asleep so we could just turn around and watch the adult one. There is also a big playground there for early birds that get there before the movie and a snack stand. Here's the website for anyone interested. Looks like there aren't any kid shows right now, but we will be planning a trip once there is and anyone that wants to come with is more than welcome! We will let you know!

New Emergency Room
I didn't realize that there is a new emergency room (not an urgent care---but a real hospital emergency room) open so close to us until a friend emailed me this clip from a newspaper. Having an Emergency Room so close is fantastic! This is at the corner of I-66 and Route 15, on the Northwest side.

My Bottom Dollar
Okay, so this isn't a very fun or glamorous tid-bit, but it is money-saving. I have started trying to do most of my grocery shopping at a store in Manassas called Bottom Dollar. An ad comes once a week in the mail so you can see what their best deals are for the week. It used to be a Food Lion and it's right in the middle of town on Sudley/234. They still carry a lot of Food Lion brand items. It's a normal small grocery store but they don't have a deli or a bakery and they don't have a huge variety of most things, but I think their produce is pretty good and they really have lower prices on everyday items, not always on convience foods though. The things I have noticed a huge savings on are cereal, poptarts, produce, cake mixes, meats, bottles of apple juice, packs of crackers with peanut butter. (Now you know what's in my pantry.) No big savings on things like chips, cheese, and milk. (And by the way, they don't carry buttermilk, although I keep asking them to get it.)
The best deals I've gotten there have been bags of granny smith apples---$1.99, 5 lb bag flour---.29, last week whole seedless watermelon was $2.99 each, and in the fall they had an ad that had a $10 coupon if you spent $25.
And FYI, when you get to the register, they have free boxes to load you stuff into or you have to buy your own plastic bags, .05 each, I get 10 if I have a full cart, and you usually have to bag everything yourself. It's no Wegmans or Harris Teeter!
Two weeks ago, I spent $130 at Harris Teeter with a cart about medium way full. The next week it was under $100 for an overflowing cart at Bottom Dollar. That's what makes me keep going back.

Picnic in the Park
Thank you so much for starting this blog up...and for all the info in it.
I was thinking of starting a Picnic in the Park for the summer--kinda going around to some of these great parks with the kiddos either weekly or twice a month. They could be the ones nearby or further. Anyone takers on that one?

Free Bowling
I thought this was a super deal last summer and all of my kids loved it...FREE BOWLING!
http://bowl-america.com/programs.asp
If you have kids that are too young for report cards, don't despair. Did you know the shoes were free for sizes under 1? So if your older kids are getting free games for grades, the younger ones are getting free shoe rentals. It is a win win for everyone.
If only the adults could get some sort of deal!

Parks and Playgrounds
Awesome idea Heather!
I thought I would start a list of some of our favorite parks and playgrounds and why we love them and you guys can just pop onto this post and add your own.
Erika's Picks:
Meadowlark Park (Vienna)- I grew up going to this beautiful botanical garden and it remains a favorite of mine. It is huge and there are gazebos and ponds and nature trails and beautiful flowers, especailly right now. They started charging about 10 years ago which is a bit of a turn off, but it's $5 a person and 6 and under are free. It's a great place to take a ball to kick around and there is a nice picnic area right in front of the park to bring lunch to.
Clemyjontri Playground (McLean)- By far, the hugest, coolest playground I have ever seen! This place is awesome for kids and there is a carousel in the middle and a track that goes around the rubbery surface that all of the play equipment is built on. My best advice is to go on a slightly chilly day so it isn't so crowded and beware that it is an easy place to lose a youngster simply because it is such a big area.
Rady Park (Warrenton)- We just discovered this park last weekend upon the recommendation of a mom from preschool. It's nothing spectacular, but they do have a small playground in the SHADE and a stream that runs through that is shallow enough for kids to get right in, which we did. It has a trail that circles it and some huge athletic fields to run around in. While you're in Warrenton, stop at my new favorite fast food restaraunt Chick-fil-a that is right on the way to the park and is so super clean and the staff is very helpful and friendly, not to mention the yummy food!
